Two holes can be the same size and still be two different repair jobs.
One might be in an open wall with plenty of room to work. The other might be in a ceiling above kitchen cabinets, with damaged insulation behind it and painting needed afterward.
That is why a measurement alone does not tell me enough to give you a useful price.
I’m Chris, the owner of Fast Patch Drywall Repair. I help Bergen County homeowners with small and midsize drywall, plaster, and ceiling repairs. When reviewing a job, I look at what it will take to complete the repair—not just cover the opening.
Where the Damage Is Matters
A wall repair within easy reach is different from working overhead or setting up above a staircase.
Ceiling height, cabinets, furniture, and limited working space can affect how the repair is reached and how the surrounding room needs to be protected. A smaller repair in an awkward location can take more work than a larger one with clear access. Fast Patch Drywall
That is one reason I ask for a photo taken from farther back, not just a close-up. I need to see where the damage sits in the room.
An Opening Is Not Always Ready to Be Patched
Sometimes a plumber or electrician has already made a clean opening, and the area is ready to be put back together.
Other times, loose edges need trimming, weakened material needs removing, or the opening needs additional preparation before new drywall can be installed. There may also be insulation, framing, trim, or corner bead that needs attention.
Older plaster can involve different preparation from drywall, particularly when the surrounding material or its support is loose. Those conditions affect the scope even when the visible damage looks fairly small. Fast Patch Drywall
When you send photos, tell me what work has already been done. For water damage, mention whether the leak has been repaired and what drying or cleanup has been completed.
Be Clear About Whether Painting Is Included
“Repair the ceiling” can mean different things to different homeowners.
You might want the damaged area repaired and left ready for priming and painting. Or you might want painting included so you are not arranging that step separately.
The painting scope matters, too. Painting only the repaired area is not the same amount of work as painting the entire wall or ceiling. Fast Patch Drywall
Tell me how far you want the job taken. I would rather discuss that at the beginning than have us discover later that we had different ideas about what the price included.
Have Several Repairs? Show Me All of Them
You might have one ceiling opening that needs immediate attention, along with an old wall patch, a damaged corner, and a few other spots you have been putting off.
Show me those areas while we are discussing the job.
Several repairs in one home can share parts of the travel, setup, protection, tool handling, and cleanup. That can make the work more efficient and reduce the average cost per repair. Six repairs do not automatically mean six times the price of one. Fast Patch Drywall
Each area still needs its own assessment, but there is no reason to assume that adding another small repair will cost the same as arranging a separate visit for it.
We can discuss the complete group of repairs, and you can decide what you want included.
Mention Any Deadline at the Start
Let me know whether you are preparing for a painter, coordinating with another contractor, or trying to finish before a particular date.
Scheduling around other trades or a tight deadline can affect how the job is organized and priced. Fast Patch Drywall
An early conversation gives us a chance to discuss what is realistic before anyone commits to a schedule.
Good Photos Help Me Give You a Useful Answer
Start with a close-up of the damage and a wider photo showing the surrounding wall or ceiling.
Include approximate dimensions, ceiling height where relevant, your town, and a short explanation of what happened. Mention whether painting is needed and send photos of any additional repairs you would like considered.
Those details help me understand the scope and determine whether I can provide a ballpark or quote from the information available. Fast Patch Drywall
You do not need to diagnose the problem yourself. Show me what you are seeing, and we can start there.
